Whale activist remains in Greenland custody
The Eastern High Court of Greenland has extended the detention of whale activist Paul Watson until December 18. This extends a prior ruling by the Court of Greenland following his arrest in July. Watson, a Canadian-American, is sought by Japan for extradition related to a 2010 incident involving allegations of damaging a whaling ship and obstructing whalers. Denmark’s justice ministry is expected to soon decide on Japan’s extradition request. Justice minister Peter Hummelgaard informed the parliamentary legal committee that a decision is anticipated shortly. For case processing, the ministry has requested the original 2010 arrest warrant and its renewals from Tokyo, with the latest lasting until March 26 of next year, as well as additional information from Japanese authorities.
