Supreme Court set to reviews whale activist Watson’s detention

The Supreme Court is set to consider the incarceration of whale activist Paul Watson, who has been imprisoned for over two months. Watson’s defense attorneys have been permitted to bring the issue of his detention to the nation’s highest court, says lawyer Finn Meinel. Paul Watson, a co-founder of Greenpeace, is detained at Japan’s behest over a 2010 incident in Antarctica. His lawyers argue that his continued custody is disproportionate to the potential punishment in Japan and assert the case is outdated. Moreover, his defense seeks to introduce a documentary video and medical information as evidence. After a Greenlandic court recently extended Watson’s detention by three weeks, he appealed, and the Greenland Court of Appeal must review his continued detention. Watson was arrested in Nuuk in late July, and Japan accuses him of assaulting whalers in 2010, an allegation he denies.
