Modi’s alliance leads in India’s marathon election
As India’s six-week long electoral marathon concludes, NDTV’s exit polls suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is on track to win a majority in the lower house, predicting 358 seats out of 543. The opposition is estimated to gain 148 seats and independents 37 seats. Modi, potentially heading for his third term which Reuters notes has only occurred once before in Indian history with Jawaharlal Nehru, exuded confidence about the NDA’s reelection on social media. With temperatures soaring above 40 degrees celsius during the voting period, the official vote count is expected by June 4.
