FH loses members as others grow

The Danish Trade Union Confederation (FH) experienced a decrease in membership by over 12,000, ending 2023 with 1,051,000 members. Despite this, overall membership in Danish unions increased by 14,200 during the same year. Since 2013, total union membership has risen by over 140,000, with Academic Central Organization (AC) gaining nearly 124,000, and non-affiliated unions adding 115,000 members. In contrast, the FH’s membership declined by almost 113,000 in the ten-year period. This shift occurs alongside a 2023 increase of approximately 30,000 wage earners, signifying an overall strengthening of the workforce. AC, carrying members like the Djøf union, credits better education for shifts between unions. FH-affiliated HK’s leader, Anja C. Jensen, stresses the importance of a strong collective for negotiation power. Djøf’s chairperson, Sara Vergo, emphasizes the value of convincing current and potential members of the benefits of strong union solidarity.
