Oral antibiotics as effective for children with bone and joint infections
A Danish study published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health shows that oral antibiotics are as effective as intravenous antibiotics for children with uncomplicated bone and joint infections. According to Rigshospital, this finding may change current practices. Research leader Ulrikka Nygaard states this could significantly impact the young patients, allowing them to avoid hospitalization and the associated stress. The study involved 248 children, randomly assigned to either oral or intravenous antibiotic treatment, excluding those with the most severe infections. Parents report positive effects, with faster recovery and the convenience of home treatment. Changes in treatment guidelines are aimed at making oral antibiotics more accessible by autumn, with detailed guidelines to be provided to pediatric departments.
