New Esbjerg plant boosts green hydrogen production
European Energy has initiated a hydrogen facility by Esbjerg, aiming to further Denmark’s shift away from fossil fuels. Located in Måde, the plant splits water into oxygen and hydrogen powered by wind turbine-generated electricity. It will scale up to produce 1,500 tons of hydrogen each year with a 12 megawatt capacity. This initiative harnesses excess power during low-demand periods. The produced hydrogen will supply an Esbjerg Harbor company, while excess heat enables district heating production. A sister facility in Kassø is set to convert solar power into methanol for maritime fuel. Alongside European Energy, Everfuel is developing a similar Fredericia plant, and H2 Energy plans for a gigawatt-scale Esbjerg plant, awaiting developments on a Germany-bound hydrogen pipeline.
