First Muslim cemetery in North Zealand

For the first time in North Zealand, Hillerød Municipality is establishing a Muslim cemetery following a request from Muslim residents. The municipal committee for nature, environment, and climate approved the initiative. Louise Colding (S), chairperson of the municipal council committee, emphasized the local Muslim community’s right to be buried in their city and noted the unsustainability and inhuman aspect of traveling to Copenhagen for cemetery visits. While other Danish cities like Aarhus, Odense, and Vejle already have such sections, Skansekirkegården has been recommended as the potential site in Hillerød, with initial provisions for about 57 north-south-oriented graves. Colding highlighted the possibility of expansion if demand increases and mentioned that this move might inspire more municipalities to accommodate local Muslim burial needs.
