May warmer than June for first time in 150+ years
For the first time in over 150 years, May has been warmer than June in Denmark, with an average temperature just 0.1 degree higher. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) reported that while June’s average of 14.5°C is typical, May’s average of 14.6°C is unusually elevated above the 1991-2020 climatological norm of 11.4°C for May. Climate change isn’t directly linked to this year’s reversal, but the overall trend of warmer global weather impacts recent temperature records. DMI suggests that although weather can ‘remember’ patterns, contributing to warmer or colder Mays typically followed by similar Junes, broader climatic shifts might lock the weather into patterns of stable high pressure, which could lead to warmer climates. The smallest previous temperature difference between May and June, aside from 2024, was observed in 1931.
