World heading toward 3.1°C temperature rise
A new UN Environment Programme report warns that global temperatures may rise between 2.6-3.1 degrees by the end of the century if greenhouse gas emissions continue at current rates. This forecast is far from the Paris Agreement goal of well below 2 and preferably not over 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. Despite this, Anne Olhoff, chief climate advisor at UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, observes no significant global progress; emissions have increased rather than decreased. Currently, a 1.3-degree rise is causing severe impacts globally, with Olhoff noting that some areas could become uninhabitable. However, achieving the Paris Agreement is still possible with a substantial and immediate global effort. Ahead of the next climate summit, UNEP Director Inger Andersen calls for unprecedented and immediate global mobilization. Danish Climate Minister Lars Aagaard expresses concern over the current trajectory, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to accelerate the green transition and reduce fossil fuel consumption.
