Søren Gade seeks to end wild gestures in Parliament

The Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Søren Gade, is calling for an end to exaggerated nonverbal reactions during legislative sessions, as reported by Politiken. Gade, on behalf of the Parliamentary Presidency, has expressed concerns that such gestures undermine the respect and dignity of the debates. These behaviors include politicians shaking their heads or making other noticeable gestures in response to speeches. While there have been no formal written complaints, the issue has been raised orally. This move is not Gade’s first effort to enforce decorum; in December, he admonished government ministers for their slow responses to committee inquiries, urging improved response times. Søren Gade has served as Parliament’s Speaker since November 2022.
