Maersk still avoids Red Sea despite ceasefire
Despite the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Danish shipping giant Maersk has opted not to redirect its vessels through the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, awaiting more long-term security measures. The Houthi movement, which controls most of Yemen, has been targeting ships off Yemen’s coasts to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians. They recently pledged to reduce ship attacks. Maersk described this as a welcomed step towards stability and normalcy in global shipping. On Wednesday, the Houthis released the crew of ‘Galaxy Leader’ to support the ceasefire in Gaza, which is to last six weeks. The Houthi’s continued attacks have impacted international shipping and the economy, prompting some companies, including Maersk, to take a longer, costlier route around Africa.
