EU grants €215M for Aalborg Portland’s CO2 capture

Aalborg Portland, a major Danish cement manufacturer and a significant CO2 emitter, has been awarded 1.6 billion DKK (approximately €215 million) from the EU Innovation Fund for a carbon capture facility. The company reduced its total emissions by 14% in the past year, achieving a 24% reduction since 2021. Their goal is to decrease CO2 emissions by 73% by 2030 compared to 2021 levels. This funding is part of an EU Commission’s selection of 85 carbon neutrality projects, sharing a total aid of €4.8 billion. Denmark secured grants for seven projects totaling 3.5 billion DKK, which aim to displace over 33 million tons of CO2 over a decade. In addition to Aalborg Portland, other Danish recipients include European Energy, Siemens Gamesa, and Vestas. Climate, Energy and Utilities Minister Lars Aagaard expressed satisfaction with the substantial EU funding directed towards Danish projects.
