Maersk eyes Red Sea sailing resumption

Maersk hopes to resume sailing in the Red Sea soon, amid an ongoing tense situation, opting for the alternative route around Africa via Cape of Good Hope for supply chain stability. The EU has deployed warships, including the Danish frigate Iver Huitfeldt, to protect civilian ships, and the US military has intercepted Houthi drones and missiles since January. Maersk acknowledges other companies resuming Red Sea passage but maintains a heightened security risk assessment. Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are retaliations against Israel’s Gaza warfare. The situation has led Maersk and others to avoid the Red Sea, forecasting potential delays and increased costs for North American goods until late 2024.
