Whale activist to remain in Greenlandic jail
The Greenland High Court denied the release of Paul Watson, a whale activist detained for 98 days, pending Japan’s extradition request over a 14-year-old incident. The detention, which began on July 21st in Nuuk, continues until November 13th, following confirmation by the appellate court. Watson, believing himself secure from the Interpol notice, remained free during prior visits to Ireland, Switzerland, Monaco, France, and the USA. The situation has provoked international demonstrations and appeals, including from France’s President. Japan accuses Watson of damaging a whaling ship and obstructing whalers in Antarctica, leading to one crew member’s injury.
