Denmark to ban PFAS in clothing and shoes

Denmark’s government aims to ban PFAS in clothing, shoes, and waterproofing products, with environment minister Magnus Heunicke highlighting the move’s positive environmental impact. PFAS are linked to health risks such as weakened immunity and cancer. The ban excludes professional and safety wear due to specific requirements. Consumers are encouraged to opt for PFAS-free alternatives, and while a national ban proceeds, Denmark works with other EU countries for a wider ban. The ban, facing industry concerns about its effect on the Danish retail sector in a global market, is set to take effect on July 1, 2026, following a transition period. However, it won’t affect products bought before then or second-hand items.
