Denmark eyes domestic warship production

Denmark could become self-sufficient in building warships with substantial investments, says Anne H. Steffensen from Danish Shipping. A new report, with Steffensen as chair of a national maritime partnership, proposes ways to augment Denmark’s shipbuilding capabilities, advocating for major investments. The partnership suggests either converting current yards or creating a new national production facility. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen highlighted the national security interest in fortifying the maritime sector. A long-term 20-25 year plan for naval acquisitions and a resale strategy for warships after 15-20 years of use are also recommended. If agreed, the construction of Denmark’s own warships could initiate by 2028. This initiative follows the projected replacement of several Defense ships, approximated to cost 40 billion kroner, and aims to allow the local maritime defense industry to share in these potential investments.
