Prep program boosts youth career paths

A report from the Danish Ministry of Children and Education finds that most young individuals who finish the Preparatory Basic Education (FGU) move on to further education or employment. Designed for under-25s needing a consolidated education offer post-primary school, entrance into FGU is determined by a municipal advisor. Outcomes show 71% of FGU completers either pursue education or employment four months later, reducing to 64% after a year. Notably, employment rates increase for FGU alumni over time while education participation drops. Non-completers have lesser advancement prospects. Minister Mattias Tesfaye acknowledges FGU’s impact but recognizes the ongoing issue with approximately 43,000 youths not in education or work. Actions to strengthen FGU’s financial resources and structural framework were agreed upon last fall.
