Green tripartite to be funded by CO2 Quota sales
The Danish government’s prominent green tripartite initiative will be partially funded by selling CO2 quotas that were initially intended to be canceled to reduce emissions reports Jyllands-Posten. A leaked document from negotiations reveals a plan to raise 2.6 billion DKK by selling four million CO2 quotas. Selling these quotas, which correspond to four million tons of CO2, could potentially increase European CO2 emissions, as these quotas allow for additional releases of CO2. Andreas Lund Jørgensen, an economist from the think tank Kraka, criticized this approach for being detrimental to the climate, calling it a ‘leakage.’ Denmark’s total CO2 emissions in 2022 were 41.7 million tons. Jeppe Bruus, the minister for the green tripartite, refuses to comment on the sale due to ongoing political negotiations. The green tripartite, agreed upon in June, is not yet passed in Parliament but backed by interest organizations, and it aims to transform Denmark’s land use and food and agriculture production.
