Tax authority tightens chain fraud control
Since 2019, Danish tax authorities have increased inspections of chain fraud and have issued over 4.9 billion DKK in tax assessments from 2018 to 2023. In 2023 alone, 2745 controls were conducted, up from 1918 in 2019. Errors are found in approximately nine out of ten controls, highlighting systematic tax and VAT criminality. Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus celebrates the stricter controls against companies avoiding tax and VAT payments through complex structures. He mentions a documentary ‘Den sorte svane’ that depicts economic crimes, suggesting it shows the pressure on criminals from tax authorities. 1000 additional control staff have been hired since 2019, and Bruus states that further measures will include more tools rather than personnel, aiming for increasing efficiency, especially by utilizing digital tools.
