Today’s news / Danish EV usage abroad skyrockets
The charging network has been expanded, and electric cars have gained greater range. This has made it easier to take the electric car on vacation, explains Andel, citing a major increase in the number of Danes charging abroad. (Archive photo). Photo: Mathias Svold/Ritzau Scanpix

Danish EV usage abroad skyrockets

The use of electric vehicles (EVs) by Danes for international travel has significantly increased, with a 1283% surge in Clever customers’ usage of charging stations abroad compared to the previous year. Clever, which manages these charging stations, gathered data from partners in several countries, including Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway, finding a 1643% increase in charge sessions. The uptick suggests a shift towards using EVs for long-distance travel. Rikke Trikker, communications director at Andel, which owns Clever, links the increase to an improved charging network and the longer range of EVs. Despite the rapid growth of registered EVs in Denmark, with an 80% increase since last year, Trikker acknowledges there’s still a long way to go for a complete transition of the transport sector, noting that most people still use fossil-fuel cars for holidays abroad.
