Von der Leyen tasks Jørgensen to lower energy costs
Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, has urged Dan Jørgensen, the new EU Commissioner for Energy, to work on reducing energy prices for companies and households. In a speech to the EU Parliament, von der Leyen highlighted the significant challenge of high energy costs and the need to respond to Russian ‘extortion’ and high inflation. Jørgensen, with his past experience as Denmark’s climate, energy, and supply minister, is expected to focus on decreasing costs and investing in clean energy. Additionally, he will play a key role in the EU’s strategy to address Donald Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs on EU goods by potentially increasing imports of US liquefied natural gas (LNG), thus balancing trade and reducing EU dependence on Russian gas.
