Queen Margrethe Toned Down Birthday Amid Fire

Queen Margrethe’s birthday celebration, following the recent throne handover, was downscaled due to a fire at Børsen in Copenhagen. The Royal Guards’ music event was canceled, but other ceremonies continued. King Frederik and Queen Mary were with the queen who abdicated in favor of her son on January 14, 2024. The fire at Børsen has sparked concern over potential structural collapse, with its iconic dragon spire lost, deeply affecting the city’s heritage. Børsen, built from 1619 to 1623, symbolizes Christian IV’s rule and was undergoing a major restoration, expected to finish by 2029, covering its copper roof, bricks, and sandstone adornments.
