Mette F. on wolves: A troubling situation

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledges the unease caused by the presence of wolves in small communities and suggests the need for more regulation to ensure public safety while respecting nature. During a parliamentary question time, Frederiksen responded to Inger Støjberg of Denmark’s Democrats, who advocated for the culling of all wolves, highlighting the priority of Danish citizens’ security over EU regulations. Under the EU’s Habitats Directive, Denmark is obligated to preserve certain species, which includes wolves. Meanwhile, Minister for Green Tripartite Jeppe Bruus indicates the need to challenge current views on coexistence with wolves and their management, with the goal to redefine what constitutes a viable wolf population at the European level. Currently, there are between 60 to 80 wolves in Denmark, all located in Jutland.
