Whale activist Watson detained longer

Paul Watson, a whale activist, will remain in detention in Greenland until November 13th after a Nuuk judge extended his custody. This decision is pending a ruling from Denmark’s Ministry of Justice on whether to extradite him to Japan for a 14-year-old incident involving alleged damage to a whaling ship and interference with whalers. Arrested on July 21st aboard his ship by 12 officers, Watson has been imprisoned since, despite his lawyers’ objections and his recent appeal to Greenland’s Court of Appeal. The heavily attended court sessions require extra seating. Watson thought he was safe, having traveled to multiple countries without issue, and has received widespread support during his detention, including letters with poems and whale drawings. The case has garnered international attention, with even France’s President Macron calling for Denmark not to extradite Watson.
