Row over misleading election campaign
Christel Schaldemose, the lead candidate for the Social Democrats in the European Parliament elections, accuses the Danish People’s Party (Dansk Folkeparti) of spreading misinformation and manipulation with their online ‘voters test.’ She expresses concern that the party purchased a domain suggesting it’s an objective test while instead misleads voters. When ‘valgtest’ and ‘EU’ are Googled, this test appears amongst the top results, misleading voters into thinking it’s an authentic test like those offered by mainstream media, says Schaldemose. She finds it problematic that the test wrongly suggests her party supports Turkey’s EU membership based solely on a vote not related to the candidacy. Dansk Folkeparti’s lead candidate, Anders Vistisen, dismisses the accusations, stating the test is informative and reflects past voting in the EU Parliament. Vistisen confirms they will not retract the test, feeling it’s a success with 30,000 Danes participating.
