Farmers criticize ‘unnecessary’ effort
Not all farmers are content with the recent political agreement on a green tripartite effort involving nitrogen reductions. Peter Kiær, chairman of the smaller farming interest organization Bæredygtigt Landbrug, expressed concern for both his industry and the environment after reviewing the agreement’s text. He views the demanded nitrogen reduction and the issue of full compensation as problematic. The deal, formed with groups including Landbrug & Fødevarer and the government, mandates a reduction of 13,780 tons of nitrogen emissions yearly. Kiær believes this to be an overimplementation harming food production. He emphasized the need to identify the correct areas for action, implying that reducing nitrogen emissions alone wouldn’t solve fjord problems. Bæredygtigt Landbrug, founded in 2010, countering Landbrug & Fødevarer’s 22,000 members with its 3,000, also opposes the proposed CO2 tax on agriculture included in the tripartite.
