Arla cuts plant-based drink range due to poor sales
Arla has decided to reduce its selection of plant-based drinks in supermarkets across several countries, including Denmark, following disappointing sales, reports Jyllands-Posten. From next week, only two varieties of Arla plant drinks will be available. The sales of plant drinks have remained relatively stable in Denmark in 2024, with no significant growth as expected, according to Henrik Lilballe Hansen, head of Arla Denmark. He suggests that the inflation crisis has played a major role in the declining revenue as plant drinks are more expensive and consumers may opt for cheaper options. Doubts have been raised about their climate and health benefits, with recent research from the University of Copenhagen showing that plant drinks contain fewer proteins and amino acids, and lose nutritional value during heat treatment. Arla’s subsidiary Jörd, specializing in plant drinks, has accumulated losses of 200 million Danish kroner over the past four years.
