South Korea’s opp calls for President’s resignation

South Korea’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party, is demanding the resignation of President Yoon Suk-yeol after actions taken regarding the recent military state of emergency. The party asserts that it is impossible to overlook accusations of insurrection, even though the state of emergency was lifted. Additionally, they threaten to initiate impeachment proceedings if Yoon does not step down. President Yoon has not yet responded to the opposition’s statement. His party leader, Han Dong-hoon, has described the state of emergency as ‘tragic’ and called for accountability from all responsible. Following political chaos, President Yoon announced he would lift the state of emergency, which had been criticized by both the opposition and his own party as unconstitutional and undemocratic. During the state of emergency, media controls and a ban on political activities were announced but were blocked by parliament through a vote, requiring immediate revocation of the emergency by law.
