Danish citizen sentenced for role in Rwandan genocide
Wenceslas Twagirayezu, a Danish citizen, was convicted by a Rwandan court on Wednesday for his involvement in the 1994 genocide, reports DR. Initially acquitted six months earlier, his verdict has been overturned to a 20-year prison sentence. Despite consistently denying the charges and claiming mistaken identity, Twagirayezu, who has been detained since his extradition from Denmark in 2018, now faces punishment for crimes including the alleged killing of at least 2,000 people. Rasmus Hylleberg, a city council member in Roskilde and friend, said Twagirayezu is subdued yet hopes to return to Denmark for imprisonment, expecting to be reunited with his children soon. Twagirayezu fled to Denmark in 2001, obtained citizenship, and lived as a warehouse worker until his 2017 arrest.
