First dip in youth disability pensions in 10 years
For the first time in a decade, the number of young people under 40 receiving early retirement disability pensions has decreased. In 2024, 5,892 new individuals under 40 were granted disability pensions – a drop of 380 from the previous years, reports Politiken. According to the Danish Agency for Labour Market and Recruitment (Star), this decline follows a consistent increase since a reform was enacted in 2013, intended to make it harder for young people to qualify. Health Chief Nicoline Rosenlund from Sampension regards the decrease as potentially positive. Despite the dip, the total number of young people on disability pension remains at a record high, reaching 39,353 in December 2024. Rosenlund emphasizes the need for action, noting that psychological disorders are the predominant cause for 77% of these young retirees.
