Argentina

Liberal outsider Javier Milei, who has been compared to former US President Donald Trump, is set to be Argentina’s next president. This became clear after his rival, economy minister and Peronist Sergio Massa, declared defeat in Sunday’s second round of presidential elections, according to AFP and Reuters. “Of course, the results are not what we wanted, and I have spoken to Javier Milei to congratulate him and wish him good luck because he is the president that a majority of Argentines have elected for the next four years,” Massa said. According to preliminary results, Milei has received 56 percent of the vote, writes AFP. The far-right Milei has promised economic shock therapy to get the country back on track. It involves shutting down the country’s central bank, replacing the peso with the US dollar and big cuts in public budgets. /ritzau/
