Between Christmas and New Year, thousands took to the streets of Argentina to show their dissatisfaction with President Milei’s reforms. According to Milei, the reforms are due to the need to put the Argentine economy in good and thorough repair. Photo: Agustin Marcarian/Reuters

Argentina’s government is finalising the details of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the country’s loan program, an official government spokesman said on Wednesday, according to Reuters. According to the report, the loan program is at USD44 billion. The negotiations are the seventh review of the loan program created in 2022. Reuters reports that the review could release USD 3.3 billion in IMF funds to Argentina.
Argentina is grappling with the worst economic crisis in decades and inflation that has set a course for 200 percent. Two-fifths of Argentina’s population lives in poverty, and with the new reform proposals from newly elected Javier Milei, there is a risk that more people will find it difficult to make ends meet. /ritzau/
