Argentina
Argentina ended 2023 with the highest inflation in decades. In December, consumer prices had risen by 211 percent compared to the same month a year earlier, according to official data on Thursday. As a result, inflation has reached its highest level since the early 1990s. The high inflation figures come at a time when President-elect Javier Milei is trying to overcome high prices. Among other things, he has promised that he will save on public spending. However, Milei has warned that the economic situation is likely to get worse before it improves in Argentina, where two-fifths of the population already live in poverty. /ritzau/
