Austria/Hitler’s birthplace

The reconstruction of former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler’s birthplace in the city of Braunau in Austria began Monday, according to a spokesperson for Austria’s Ministry of the Interior. The house, where Hitler was born in 1889, will henceforth be a police station. The idea behind the project is that it should be as unattractive a destination as possible for neo-Nazis and others who want to pay tribute to the former Nazi leader. The police station is scheduled to be operational in early 2026. The decision has been made after several years of legal disputes about what should happen to the house. The house is located close to the border with Germany and the German state of Bavaria. /ritzau/dpa
