Avian flu hits 32,000 turkeys

A large turkey farm at Lundby near Skælskør (Ed: 93 km southwest of Copenhagen) with around 32,000 turkeys is affected by avian flu, according to samples analysed by the State Serum Institute for the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (VFA) and the Danish Emergency Management Agency is to put down the birds over the coming days. Partly for animal welfare reasons and partly to limit the risk infection spreading. Bird flu only very rarely infects humans. “Wild birds are in the process of their of autumn migration. Therefore, it is important that everyone who has birds follows the rules and takes responsibility for protecting their poultry from infection from wild birds. One way to do this is to protect your poultry from contact with wild birds,” says Mette Kirkeskov Sie, Head of Unit at the Danish VFA. /VFA/
