Mette F. on shadow fleet: Russia’s way of war continuity

Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen expressed concern over Russia’s so-called ‘shadow fleet’ in the Baltic Sea, considering it a way for Russia to continue the war in Europe. She spoke on Tuesday at a NATO meeting in Helsinki, emphasizing Denmark’s special interest and responsibility. Frederiksen highlighted looking into new ways to handle the fleet, potentially through the focus on ships’ insurance papers. Denmark plans to request ships in its waters to disclose their insurance proof, as announced by foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Safety in the Baltic Sea and protection of underwater critical infrastructure were major issues. NATO’s increased presence in the Baltic Sea with two additional ships follows suspected involvement of the tanker ‘Eagle S’ in a series of cable breaks on December 25, implicating it as part of Russia’s shadow fleet.
