Trump aims for day 1 tariffs on Mexican, Canadian goods

Donald Trump intends to sign an order imposing a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada as one of his first acts upon inauguration as President of the USA. Announced via his social media platform, Truth Social, he claims these tariffs will remain until Mexico and Canada address the issue of drugs, including fentanyl, and illegal migration into the U.S. He accuses both countries of having the power to solve these issues yet demands they act on it. During his campaign, Trump threatened a 15% tariff on Mexican imports if drug trafficking wasn’t halted. Moreover, Trump plans to increase tariffs on goods from China by 10% to counteract the flow of drugs through Mexico. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that a trade war between the U.S. and China would lead to no winners.
