Reumert awards go gender-neutral

The Reumert Awards, Denmark’s most prestigious stage arts honor, will no longer have gender-separated categories when they are presented this June. The Jury has decided to merge the lead role awards into a single ‘Årets Hovedrolle’ prize and combine the gender-split ensemble awards into ‘Årets Birolle.’ Rie Hammer, jury chairperson, states that theater has evolved with many plays casting roles regardless of gender, and inclusivity is paramount. Reumert Awards aims to accommodate the entire spectrum of stage arts and has introduced two new categories: ‘Årets Samspil,’ celebrating the interaction between artists, and ‘Årets Solopræstation,’ honoring solo performances. The tradition of gender-based awards is now considered outdated, as seen with Norway’s Heddaprisen also having abandoned gender divisions in 2023. The Reumert ceremony will be held on June 20 at Odeon in Odense, with nominees yet to be announced.
