Denmark persists in prison deal with Kosovo

Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard remains determined to secure support from the opposition in Kosovo’s parliament for a deal to rent 300 prison places. Despite the agreement not passing due to lack of votes on Thursday, the Kosovan government will reintroduce the bill, needing a two-thirds majority in parliament. After a failed attempt in February and a recent virtual meeting with Kosovo’s Justice Minister, Hummelgaard anticipates a new vote within weeks, expressing optimism and patience. The deal, signed in April 2022 and costing 1.5 billion kroner over ten years, awaits ratification. The Danish minister is prioritizing the passage of the agreement to alleviate the strain on Denmark’s prisons, dismissing alternative proposals such as temporary employment of Kosovan officers in Denmark.
