New ocean nature fund to restore reefs
A new political agreement in Denmark has allocated DKK 500 million for the restoration of marine nature by 2030, announced by Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke. The agreement, reached with several political parties, includes mapping Danish sea areas and restoring specific reefs by 2024. Heunicke emphasized the urgency to halt decades of degradation, declaring that marine habitats must be restored and more areas must be protected. This project is an endeavored correction to past mistakes spanning 20-30 years, Heunicke says. Measures also involve creating a catalog of remedial methods based on current knowledge and developing digital infrastructure for marine environmental data. The funding, sourced from the Green Fund, comes amid concerns over pronounced oxygen depletion affecting marine life in Danish waters, including recent severe incidences of hypoxia causing fish and lobster deaths in Limfjorden.
