Mayor to monitor shift in drug trade
Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, the mayor of Copenhagen, is vigilant about the potential displacement of Pusher Street’s cannabis trade to other areas. The historic street is being dug up to dismantle the well-entrenched drug market. While temporary closures haven’t led to increased trade elsewhere, Andersen states that the police are prepared to act firmly if necessary. She believes policing will be more effective without a centralized drug market like Christiania, as other Copenhagen residents are more proactive in reporting drug deals. The transformation of the area aims to turn it into a creative hub after the removal of paving stones was celebrated by onlookers. The decision to close Pusher Street came after a community meeting, prompted by a fatal shooting last year.
