Environmental activist Watson to stay detained
A Greenlandic court ruled that environmental activist Paul Watson’s detention will be extended until September 5. The 73-year-old, known for founding the Captain Paul Watson Foundation and co-founding Greenpeace, was arrested in Nuuk on a Japanese warrant for a 2010 incident involving whalers in Antarctica. Greenland Police, with Danish assistance, executed the arrest. Watson’s detention intends to secure his presence during extradition deliberations to Japan, where he is accused of assaulting whalers. His defense contested the extradition in court, where they were barred from presenting a video they claim disproves the assault accusation. Watson has appealed and insists on his innocence, suggesting Japan is seeking vengeance. The Danish Ministry of Justice will review the extradition request. The next court session is set for September 4.
