Danish government extends temporary border control

The Danish government has extended the temporary border control with Germany for an additional six months, as announced by Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard. Initially set to expire in May, the controls have been prolonged due to the current threat assessment. The government has shifted the focus of these controls towards crime-fighting efforts rather than entry checks since April 2023. There have been concerns about the legality of the recurring extensions, both from legal professionals and the EU Commission. Despite potential legal issues, the Danish government continues to reinstate the border controls citing security and safety reasons, emphasizing the threat of terrorism. Minister Hummelgaard states the controls ease commuter life while strengthening anti-crime measures, especially amid heightened terror threats related to perceived offenses against Islam and the Israel-Palestine conflict.
