Organic food sales rise after years of decline
Danish consumers have started buying organic food again after several years of decline. According to a 2024 retail sales report from Statistics Denmark, organic food sales increased by 3% for the first time in four years. Brian Friis Helmer from Arbejdernes Landsbank attributes this to reduced inflation and wage increases, which provide more financial freedom for purchasing organic products. The growth was mainly driven by increased sales of organic fruit and vegetables, accounting for 38% of organic food sales, particularly carrots and potatoes. Organic meat sales slightly declined compared to 2023, with beef and veal being the most sold, followed by pork and chicken. In 2023, organic foods accounted for 11.6% of total food sales, slightly down from the previous year due to overall higher food sales in 2024.
