Municipal websites down after attack

On Monday morning, several Danish municipal websites went down after a cyberattack, as reported by Avisen Danmark. Among the affected were websites for Aarhus, Vejle, Esbjerg, and others. Vejle Municipality announced on Facebook that the outage was due to a DDoS (distributed Denial of Service) attack, which floods a website with traffic to make it unavailable. Aarhus Municipality confirmed to TV2 Østjylland that it was a cyberattack. It remains unclear if the other municipal websites’ outages were also caused by such attacks. The Center for Cyber Security (CFCS) was aware and had alerted some targets prior to the incidents. There’s no further information on how the CFCS issued these alerts. Vejle Municipality assured that the outage did not compromise their website’s content or security. In June, the CFCS raised the threat level for destructive cyber attacks from low to medium, noting such threats could affect critical infrastructure but were not directly aimed at citizens.
