Ministry explored maximizing oil production until 2050

Despite agreeing to a ‘temporary’ gas production increase amid the security policy compromise in spring 2022, Danish Climate Ministry officials inquired about maximizing oil production until 2050. This was revealed through access to meeting documents obtained by Greenpeace and Ritzau. Greenpeace criticizes the ministry’s approach, stating it diverges from the intent to halt oil and gas pursuits, while the Green Left and Red-Green Alliance parties question the ministry’s consistency with Denmark’s international commitments to stop fossil fuel production. Parliament members have called for a ministerial consultation. Climate Minister Lars Aagaard denies encouraging new drilling bids, explaining the inquiry aimed at understanding market dynamics for European energy independence in light of Russia’s actions. The Foreign Ministry asserts ongoing dialogue aligns with a gradual transition without compromising energy security.
