Rema 1000’s Sales Hit Billion Mark but Profits Drop
In 2023, the turnover of Danish Rema 1000 stores increased by 10 percent from the previous year, reaching DKK 22.9 billion. However, net profits took a significant dip, falling by DKK 177 million to DKK 463 million. This decline was partly due to expenses incurred from taking over activities from Aldi, despite the positive trend in sales, including expansion with several new stores. The falling profits also reflect the absence of property sales that had boosted the previous year’s results. Rema 1000 had received regulatory approval to take over 114 Aldi stores but agreed to sell a few to maintain market competition. They anticipate opening 70 new stores in the current year, most of which are former Aldi locations. The annual report charts a period marked by intense competition in the retail market with strong performances by Rema 1000 and Salling Group, whereas Coop reported a substantial operating loss of DKK 717 million for 2023.
