Mayors plan military shipbuilding hub in Funen

All the mayors in Funen, Denmark, have united to make the region a future hub for Danish military shipbuilding, Odense’s mayor, Peter Rahbæk Juel (S), tells TV 2 Fyn. An alliance, consisting of shipyards and private companies, has been formed with the objective of creating an abundance of jobs and bolstering the local economy. A key advantage noted is the existing robotics expertise for building large metal structures at the Port of Odense. A national maritime partnership revealed that building warships in Denmark is feasible, recommending substantial investments to enhance shipbuilding capacity, a long-term Navy acquisition plan, and systematic reselling of old warships. If the government agrees, the first ship could be ready by 2028. The national maritime partnership was initiated in August 2022 with the information that the Navy will soon require new ships, with procurement costs estimated at around 40 billion kroner.
