Government to exempt royal couple from inheritance tax

The Danish government plans to introduce a bill in April to exempt King Frederik and Queen Mary from paying inheritance tax on assets, including any castles inherited after Queen Margrethe. The proposed amendment to the estate tax law aims to support the continuity of the royal house and the preservation of cultural heritage, which includes historical artifacts and properties significant to Danish cultural heritage. While some properties the royal couple will manage are state-owned and thus not covered by the new rules, the government believes all assets serve the same purpose. The change is intended to benefit current and future monarchs and their spouses, reflecting Denmark’s commitment to maintaining a modern, future-proof monarchy that safeguards communal heritage. Queen Margrethe personally owns Marselisborg Castle and Chateau de Cayx, while other residences used by the royal family are state properties.
