Capital light rail delayed until 2026

The opening of the northern section of the Capital Light Rail in Copenhagen has been postponed to 2026 due to construction challenges, particularly in Gladsaxe and Buddinge areas, including complications with the bridges over the Hillerødmotorvejen. The southern stretch from Ishøj to Rødovre Nord is still scheduled to open in fall 2025. Project Director Henrik Bendsen stresses difficulties with traffic management, material shortages, unexpected construction phase issues, and lack of specialized equipment. Herlev’s mayor, Thomas Gyldal Petersen, expressed dissatisfaction and requested an examination of possible 2025 openings for Herlev Hospital or Herlev Station. The full 28-kilometer route with 29 stations will see interim bus services until completion, with an expected annual ridership of around 13 million passengers from 2030.
